Rivals and Rivalry

I think this quote is valid and applicable in many situations beyond the business world.

A rival is what pushes us t.o become stronger, faster, smarter, and more creative. Rivalries on the playing field and the sporting world work the same way. Even the worlds of science, music, and art see productive competition.

Your rival is usually someone of roughly similar background (in gender, age, sport played, job title) who more or less evenly matches you in skill and with whom you face off in repeated encounters.

Would Bill Gates have accomplished as much if there had been no Steve Jobs? What about Coke without Pepsi? Paul McCartney without John Lennon?

Don Miguel Ruiz wrote a book called, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide t.o Personal Freedom.

This self-help book outlines a code of conduct based on ancient Toltec wisdom. It was first published in 1997; has sold over eight million copies in the US and has been translated into forty-six languages worldwide.

The one agreement that resonates with me is Always Do Your Best. Perhaps this comes from how I have always dealt with whatever challenges I have faced from childhood and ongoing.

Have you read this book? Which of the agreements stands out for you?

Approximately one million Canadians have an eating disorder. Societal pressures poor body image, and unrealistic expectations can be among the contributors. Eating disorders are a universal problem.

What are eating disorders?
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses. They involve a pattern of unhealthy eating or dieting behaviour that can cause health problems and/or emotional and social distress. Here are the most common ones:

Anorexia Nervosa
Characterized b.y behaviours that interfere with maintaining an adequate weight driven b.y distress over body size or shape. Typically, a person is less than "85%" of their expected weight.

Bulimia Nervosa
Characterized b.y periods of food restriction followed b.y out of control binge eating with recurrent compensating behaviours t.o “purge” the body of food, either through vomiting/laxatives or excessive exercise/dieting.

Binge Eating Disorder
Characterized b.y recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food then experiencing shame, distress or guilt afterwards.

What causes eating disorders?
They can affect anyone regardless of gender, age, racial and ethnic identity, sexual orientation or socio-economic background. Eating disorders are influenced b.y biological, psychological and social factors. It is a combination of genetic vulnerability, personality, mental state and environmental factors (such as pressure t.o be thin, trauma, etc.) that can lead t.o an eating disorder. Eating disorders are more common in women but also occur in men.

How devastating are eating disorders?
Many are never diagnosed and many people never seek treatment. Eating disorders have the highest overall mortality of any mental illness.

What to watch for:
.Increasingly restrictive eating patterns (i.e. new diets, avoiding food based on colour/texture, cutting out progressively more food groups)
.Eating more than normal in frequency and quantity
.Eating alone or in secret
.Disappearing t.o the bathroom after meal
.Intense exercise routines
.Loss of interest in life, hobbies, friends, etc.
.Abnormal weight gain or loss
.Frequent stomach aches, fatigue, dizzy spells or dry mouth/bad breath

What can you do?
It can be difficult and stressful t.o talk t.o someone you care about who has an eating disorder. You may not want t.o believe what is happening. However, the sooner you start the conversation, the sooner h.elp can be obtained and the better the outcome.

Don't assume you know someone just from what you see on the surface. This applies t.o members on this site, a neighbour, a work colleague, a friend or any other place you may encounter people. Often, you have no idea what goes on behind someone's closed doors or what they have chosen t.o share or not t.o share with others. Trust often is a factor in their choice.

Trauma is something that happens t.o. you. Whereas healing is proactive. You have t.o be aware of it, believe it is within your span of control and actively choose t.o do something about it.

The Difference Between Frostbite and Hypothermia

Here in Ontario, we often have below-zero temperatures for a little more than a third of year. In Canada, each year, there are more than Eighty deaths from over-exposure t.o the cold and there are many injuries resulting from hypothermia and frostbite.

What Frostbite?
Just like how grass in your lawn freezes over in winter, your skin cells too can die from overexposure t.o cold, resulting in damage – characterized by waxy, numb skin – referred t.o as frostbite. It can occur whenever temperatures drop below zero, as that when water in your skin can freeze. Frostbite tends t.o affect extremities, like fingers and toes, since they are more difficult for the body to keep warm. This is why you should always wear warm socks and gloves if you expect t.o be staying outside in sub-zero temperatures for an extended period of time.

How Serious is Frostbite?
Most cases of frostbite are reversible, and begin t.o heal when the affected area is warmed slowly. If not addressed soon enough, permanent damage can occur. When skin cannot be saved, amputation can be necessary t.o prevent infection in the deadened area.

How T.O Treat Frostbite?
Treatment for frostbite revolves around rewarming frozen skin slowly. Although it may be tempting t.o warm a frozen area near a heat source like a fireplace or an electric heater. However, if your skin is numb, you may not register that you are burning skin rather than just rewarming! Instead, remove any wet clothing covering the frostbitten area, and submerge affected skin in warm water. Don’t be alarmed if you feel pain while you rewarm frostbite – this is normal and will usually subside. Drink hot beverages t.o warm your whole body from inside out while avoiding alcohol or caffeinated beverages. However, if a person is also suffering from hypothermia, take caution when offering them something t.o drink as they may also have decreased level of consciousness and impaired swallowing.

When Should I Seek Medical Attention for Frostbite?
If frostbitten skin does not regain feeling or still appears waxy after reheating, you should consult a medical professional for further treatment.

Hypothermia: Signs, Symptoms and Treatment
Many people think hypothermia occurs in arctic temperatures, but they couldn’t be more incorrect. You can suffer from hypothermia in temperatures as high as 10°C if the conditions are wet and windy enough. If left without treatment, hypothermia can lead t.o permanent organ damage and death. That’s why it is important t.o familiarize yourself with symptoms of hypothermia and t.o react quickly should you think that you or a loved one is becoming hypothermic.

Here are a few things that caught my attention today:

Palindrome Week
This is a good week for palindrome lovers. Every date until the end of next week is a palindrome (a sequence that reads the same backward as forward). It started yesterday with "1-20-21" and goes all the way through until next Friday "1-29-21. " There's another - stretch near the end of the year starting on December first.

Where Do You During A Video Calls?
When you are on a video call, are you mostly looking the other people or looking yourself? According to a new survey of remote workers, fifty-two percent said they spend more time looking their co-workers. Twenty-five percent admitted they are mostly looking themselves.

Odds Finding Someone with Same Birthday In Same Room
If there are twenty-three people in the same room, there is a fifty-fifty chance that two of them will have the same birthday.

How I Want To Be Remembered

I am not going t.o list challenges I have faced and continue t.o handle in my life. That is not my way of coping with things. I am also not one who waves a flag t.o draw attention t.o myself in an attempt t.o garner empathy or support. Besides, no one wants t.o hear about my "stuff". Others have their own challenges and issues they are dealing with.

However, I will say that I have found strength that I never imagined I would need. I have faced every challenge and never whined about it with a “why m.e?”attitude. I hope that is how others view m.e and how I want t.o be remembered. Yes, there are other attributes such as altruistic, compassionate dependable and intelligent but ones listed above are are key.

Confidence vs Cockiness

People often confuse confidence with cockiness, but the couldn’t be more different.

Confidence is quiet and a natural expression of ability, expertise, and self-regard.

Cocky and conceited people tend t.o take a position and totally disregard differing opinions or of view. They know they're right--and they want (actually, they need ) you know it, too.

Confident people don't mind being proved wrong. They feel finding out what is right is a lot more important than being right. And when they're wrong, they're secure enough to back down graciously.

Confident people don't need the glory; they know what they've achieved.

Confident people don't need approval from others because their validation comes from within.

Confident people aren't afraid t.o ask for help.

Confident people aren't afraid t.o sometimes look silly and being in situations where they aren't at their best.

People envy confidence but often despise cockiness.

Ode to Older People

Older people are easy spot at sporting events. During the playing of the National Anthem, they remove their caps, stand proudly at attention and sing loudly without embarrassment. They know the words and believe them.

Older people remember the Great Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbour, Normandy and ration stamps.

If you bump into an older person on the sidewalk, they will apologize first.

If you pass an older person on the street, a man will tip his hat in greeting a lady and will say, "Ladies first".

Older people will hold the door open for others to enter first and wait till everyone else has passed through.

Older people get embarrassed when others curse in front of women and and dislike that language used on television or in movies.

Older people are proud to state their age and make sure they receive their 'senior discounts'.

Older people dress for comfort and don't worry about fashion trends.

Older people seldom brag unless it's about their or grandchildren.

Older people should be valued, appreciated and taken care of whenever they need a hand.
