A Day of Reflection.....Grateful To Be Alive!

When you are faced with a life-threatening condition, you have 2 options: You can give up and surrender or you can fight with every fibre of your being. One year ago, for the second time in just over a decade, I chose the latter.

When laying in Emergency, I came ‘this close’ towards crossing over but knew I wasn’t ready. Later, when I was having tests and scans done, a technician said, ‘You must have a guardian angel looking out for you. Not many people survive what you have. But I know you will be OK’. I knew exactly what he meant and those words will resonate forever.

Every day was and is a journey. There was a battery of tests and consultations until a comprehensive diagnosis was made and treatment plan outlined.

After 6 days, I was sent home, knowing more challenges were ahead and new milestones to reach. I was afraid to go to sleep at night, in case I didn’t wake up. I would say out loud, ‘Please let me wake up tomorrow. I am not ready to leave.’

Now, I am less patient. I don’t ‘sweat the small stuff’. I cringe when I hear or read people whining about what I perceive be trivial stuff. Most of the time, I shake ‘my’ head incredulously, bite ‘my’ tongue and hold back from commenting.

I have battled back. I am a long way from where I was a year ago. Not yet a hundred percent but so much closer. Recently the Doctor remarked once again, I am here today because I am a strong, determined and resilient woman.

I don’t usually share such personal information about myself. I decided to do so to remind everyone, not to take anything for granted. Live and appreciate each day of your life, the best you can, as you don’t know, if there will be a tomorrow.

Stimulate my mind and the possibilities are endless.

Good to hear you're doing better. My 2 cents
1. Most of the time, I shake my head incredulously, bite my tongue and hold back from commenting. Don't hold back from commenting, it can release the stress of being around stupid people.
2. Remain a strong, determined and resilient woman.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Hi sexyldy1000

thanks for sharing your story

like you, I take time to reflect on life

I do count those blessings

in an instant everything can change

you've fought everything in your life head on

there are things I still want to do

I tell the people that "know" me that I have lived a full life

and, when my time comes, don't be sad for me

but, I still want more, and pay i forward with people by telling them how good they have it compared to less fortunate people

just when I think I have it bad, all I have to do is look around to remind myself how good I have it

at work I put post it notes to remind me of being positive, of staying in the moment, of paying it forward, of smiling to make someone happy

but, that's just me

have a wonderful week

hmm

Camila Cabello - "Havana"

Hey
Havana, ooh na-na (ay)
Half of my heart is in Havana, ooh-na-na (ay, ay)
He took me back to East Atlanta, na-na-na
Oh, but my heart is in Havana (ay)
There's somethin' 'bout his manners (uh huh)
Havana, ooh na-na (uh)
He didn't walk up with that "how you doin'?" (uh)
(When he came in the room)
He said there's a lot of girls I can do with (uh)
(But I can't without you)
I knew him forever in a minute (hey)
(That summer night in June)
And papa says he got malo in him (uh)
He got me feelin' like
Ooh-ooh-ooh, I knew it when I met him
I loved him when I left him
Got me feelin' like
Ooh-ooh-ooh, and then I had to tell him
I had to go, oh na-na-na-na-na

You are a very strong lady, and you know that god doesn't give us things to deal with unless he knows we can handle them. I wish you all the best my friend and stay on that great road to recovery as you are almost there to making a full recovery and your doctor is right you couldn't of done it if you weren't such a resilient and strong lady. I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers always my friend.. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day..

I understand where you are coming from.
I've almost been there...
Life is short, isn't it?
You're inner monologue is better than mine
I'm on the precipice of telling some of them to fuck off.
But.. . what's the point of that?

Words are like meatloaf- they can be sculpted into any shape you choose.

When I had my 2nd heart attack, laying on the table as they were taking my clothes off, I couldn't think of anything I had left to accomplish. I felt calm and ready to go if it was my time. The morphine may have had something to do with that.

Yes, I know I am not alone in having overcome obstacles and odds that were not in my favour. There is an unique bond and kinship with others who have been through something similar, that those who haven’t, simply cannot understand.

I apparently had a "near death" experience, where the Dr. said if I'd been 20 minutes later getting to the hospital I wouldn't have made it. I can't help but think, "if I'd been on the phone with the Provincial Nurse Self-Help Line" just a bit longer, or waited to call them", I wouldn't have been able to drive myself to the hospital emergency room. And I might have killed someone else, on the way there.

Unfortunately, I didn't even recall him saying it at the time, and was only made aware of it 17 years after the surgery that apparently saved me - when my sister told me the story.

I still haven't "wrapped my head around it". Thanks for reminding me that we "just never know", and we have to make the most of every minute we are given.

I'm SO glad you made it through, OK.

I did have a near death experience but I was too out of it to realize any epiphanies. That did come later though. I was feeling pretty sick when it occurred to me that some people spend their whole lives in that kind of pain and I was only feeling it for the first time. It definitely puts things in perspective.

I am glad that you decided to hang on. I don't know what happened to you but I'm glad that you are better. How right you are on fighting or giving up. As an RN in a high acuity Medical ICU I have seen it myself. Many people on the site are agnostic and that's okay. I do believe in a higher power and I think that if it's not our time and we fight he helps us in our fight to live. May you have many more years!! John
